This morning while reading my bible, I came across a verse which I believe pertains to the NFL players who are kneeling and the coaches who are supporting this act of disrespect. I have selected Coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers to call out by name because he wears a cross around his neck. Never thought too much about people who wear crosses, I always like to observe them and see if their actions represent their words. You know the saying, “walk the talk.”
None the less, by wearing the cross, he is stating that he is a follower of Jesus Christ. And as a Christian, myself, I know we are responsible for each other and thus I feel the need to make them aware of the Apostle Paul’s warning in Galatians. For it is my hope that by appealing to them through our Christianity, they will see the harm they are doing.
In the book of Galatians, the church was fighting among themselves and taking sides as to who was right and who was wrong. Who were the real follower of Christ, and who were the posers? Who deserved the inheritance of eternity and who did not? Funny, they were all God’s children and could not see it.
Funny, we are all God’s children and can not see it! So we hurt one another the best way possible, just as the Galatians did.
Infighting, whether within a group or within a nation, does absolutely nothing to solve the problem. Instead there are angry, hurt individuals and a divide that will widen every day until the eventual split or demise of the group or country. Satan is an expert in nudging our egos to get us to go there all of the time!
Here are the words from the Apostle Paul.
“If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.” Galatians 6:15
What a warning! Watch out or you will be destroyed by each other, could mean that your actions will affect the whole NFL and the sport of football. Polls are showing that your fellow Americans are turning away from your sport and your popularity ratings are plummeting downhill! So, is this where the history books will point and call it the beginning of the extinction of the NFL and the sport of football?
Now, let’s check the bible once again about respect for our government.
“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, who ever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and this who do so will bring judgment on themselves.” Romans 13:1-2
If you go back to the manifests of the Pilgrims, you will find that they established America as the new Jerusalem. Ordained by God. If you disrespect the flag, and our national anthem; you are disrespecting God. God ordained America, and His faithful servants worked hard to establish the United States of America. They lost their loved ones and many their own lives.
There are so many who came before you and fought for this country to be free! And some of those who fought and died were still held in the bondage of slavery back then. How can you disrespect them also? There are those who fight for you and our country now, and die so that you can play the game of football and earn the extravagant salaries. How can you disrespect them too? These were and are the good, faithful servants of God. Isn’t that what we all want to be as Christians…the good, faithful servants of God?
Yes, we have problems in America and we have groups who exploit these problems for their own financial gain. (Which I personally believe there is a special place in hell for these groups!) But our problems did not happen over night!
President Trump has inherited these problems and prayerfully he will find solutions for them. Still, that does not exclude prior Presidencies from fault either. They each had their chance and each left separate legacies, which history will decide if they benefited America or their own egos and finances.
What will history say about you and your actions? Your actions during football season and after football season. Did you disrespect your flag, your country, and ultimately God? Or did you stand firm respecting your flag, your country and God? Then hit the off-season with a holy fire burning inside to help to create real change?
Something to think about!
I ask you to review your divisive actions and decide to cease, while searching for opportunities where you can serve God in the off-season and our country. My prayers will continue for you.
God Bless You!
God Bless America!
